You guys thought this was over the top? Except for the murder, 90% of the people where I come from live like this! Cousins marrying each (1st cousins too), houses full of random relatives just yelling out their opinions, spineless women, ovely alpha men, fighting about inheritance. When I read about this book I thought, Ah! How refreshing! finally a romance book with a REALISTIC setting!

I swear I have read every Linda Howard book and then I read your review and for the life of me I can’t remember the book. I remember the bar part but I think that may be the back blurb. I better go did this one out.

Howard can be hit or miss. I wonder if this one was a miss but, I think I really liked it because I remember people saying how much they hated it and I thought, wow, I must be really weird

Ha ha, Rosario, the second time I re-read this, I started with Roanna at the bar, too!

That whole Jesse-Webb thing was just gross.

What really creeped me out about this one wasn’t the incest bits (too over-the-top to be even remotely believable, I thought), but the Jessie-Webb relationship in the first half of the book. I don’t know why I hated it so much, but I did, and next time I reread this I’ll probably be skipping all that first part and starting when Roanna shows up at the bar.

All things considered we should run in the other direction when we read what this book is about, and yet it works and is a great book.

I think Kristie hits on why–Roanna IS the wimpiest of heroines, doormat of doormats, and you feel like she needs someone with Webb’s strength to love and protect her, so Webb needs to be almost too alpha.

Though I agree I’d have liked to see Roanna lose it, just once with the rest of the pathetic family.

I knew exactly what you mean with this one. By all rights I should hate it. The ickies, Roanna one the the wimpiest heroines ever, Web who is really almost too strong an alpha. A lot of people do hate this one. But it must be the skill of Linda Howard ’cause she somehow manages to pull it off for me and make it work. I give it the same kind of grade you do.
