My Favorite Song of the Moment

Amy Winehouse might be totally played out right now because they keep playing that fucking “Rehab” song on the radio, but damn, this other song of hers “Me and Mr. Jones” is sheer perfection. She’s chav-a-licious, a drag queen dream… she’s like Lil Kim, Sylvia Plath, Bette Midler, and Dusty Springfield all mixed together in a blender. I have to admire a woman who uses the word “fuckery” in a song, especially if the song starts with “What kind of fuckery is this?” Awesome. Fucking fabulous. I also gotta give props to a woman who performs and sounds awesome even though she’s SO DRUNK that she’s using the mic stand to hold herself up.

Check out the lyrics after the jump and tell me they’re not brilliant.

Nobody stands in between me and my man, it’s me
and Mr Jones (Me and Mr Jones)

What kind of fuckery is this?
You made me miss the Slick Rick gig (oh Slick Rick)
You thought I didn’t love you when I did (when I did)
Can’t believe you played me out like that (Ahhh)

No you aint worth guest list
Plus one of all them girls you kiss (all them girls)
You can’t keep lying to yourself like this (to yourself)
Can’t believe you played yourself (out) like this

Rulers one thing but come Brixton
Nobody stands in between me and my man

‘Cause it’s me and Mr Jones (Me and Mr Jones)

What kind of fuckery are we?
Nowadays you don’t mean dick to me (dick to me)
I might let you make it up to me (make it up)
Who’s playing Saturday?

What kind of fuckery are you?
Side from Sammy you’re my best black Jew
But I could swear that we were through (we were through)
I still want to wonder ’bout the things you do

Mr. Destiny, 9 and 14
Nobody stands in between me and my man
‘Cause it’s Me and Mr Jones (Me and Mr Jones)

I’ve never heard of her before, but I liked the song. I’ll have to check out more of her work. I love the bluesy raspy quality of her voice.

LOVE her. She was a bit blurry in that one, though. And I love Rehab!

Love her. The woman is a total trainwreck, but lordy can she sing. And write.

Me and Mr Jones is also my current Favorite.Song.Ever. I just finished my own squee! blog entry about that CD. I paid cash for it instead of bumming it from my musicy friends because we all got to do our part to keep that girl in hairspray and eyeliner.

“What kind of fuckery is this?” is the perfect phrase for (almost*) any occasion. And how often do you hear the phrase, “You don’t mean dick to me.” in a song? Not often enough. The woman is a blessing to the English language.

    *YMMV

If you didn’t know, the “Mr. Jones” is the rapper Nas — she’ll let you go with missing Slick Rick, but no one’s gonna make her miss Nas.

And yes, she’s brilliant. I think the trainwreck part is quite played up for her image, because she’s actually very savvy. Listening to this song, I always get the impression of that high school dance scene in American Graffiti where they’re all dancing in the gym — except dancing to this song. This clip of her on Britain’s Nevermind the Buzzcocks is brilliant.

I have, in fact, used it in class. I was helping some kids workshop their poems and this girl only had one line in her poem… and the assignment was repetition. I looked at her and said, “What kind of fuckery is this?” Awesome.

Carrie, yes. A friend actually told me. JUICY! I happen to love Slick Rick myself. As for American Graffiti… dude, good call.

LOVE this girl. I mean, she’s got a sailor’s tattoo of a pin-up on her arm, the biggest beehive in the Universe and she dances like a crazy person. She does a great cover of Monkey Man.

I love this woman’s shit. Seriously she’s bringing back the big brass bands with a furiousness. I appreciate artists who actually bring in actual musicians with them, that it’s not all digitized crap pounding away in the background. She HAS to have a set of pipes. She HAS to have good jazz players for her arrangements because they ARE well written.

My fave is “Tears Dry On Their Own” for various reasons. But I just LOVE the way it ends. With this wail and a big middle finger to fade off endings. It’s GLORIOUS. *swoons*

    Oh Mah. Gah.

    I LOVE Amy Winehouse.

I heard her on the plane back to school at the beginning of winter quarter and have fallen ass-over-teakettle in love with this woman.

And I love “Me And Mr. Jones” for the same reason you do (namely, “fuckery”).
