Shiloh Walker has Sex with Werewolves

Shiloh Walker has a very special prize for one lucky commenter. She won’t tell me what it is. I guess it’s a surprise!

____________________________________

Authors get asked a lot of questions. A lot. Some relate to writing, and those, while I doubt I’m any authority, I’m fine with.

Some want to know what they should do to get their book published.
Research the subject.

Some want to know if I have any say with books covers.
Depends on the publisher, but usually, the answer is little to none.

Some want to know how much money I make.
Sorry, I can’t discuss that sort of thing.

Some want to know where I get my ideas from.
The Idea Factory, just down the road. ;o) Yes, I have a weird sense of humor.

But the one that really gets me is this one…
So, do you write from personal experience?

I hate this question. Sometimes, I think they are actually wanting to know about something other than the hot sex. You can tell by the way they ask. When it seems like a real question, I try to figure exactly what they are referring to. Yeah, I’ve written some based around my experiences as a nurse, and many of my heroines take martial arts. I’ve got a brown belt in tae kwon do and though I’m far from an expert, the training does come in handy while writing.

It’s when they ask me while leering and/or smirking that I get irritated. Those questions aren’t the kind that deserves much answer. I mean… private, hello?

Those that are leering and smirking aren’t referring to the murderous plots, the psycho killers or the shy nurse that did a life makeover after she was mugged. Before anybody asks, nope, that one wasn’t from experience either. I’ve never been shy a day in my life. A nurse, yes. But, shy? No way. Never been mugged either.

No, what they are referring to is the sex. The first time I was asked this, my response was, No. It’s pure imagination. I was told, Nobody’s imagination is that vivid. I laughed and said, Well, I dunno. I kill people in sometimes graphic fashion, but I didn’t have to get hands on experience for that. I gave him the most crazy smile I could manage and he walked off.

*G* The guy that asked me this was… hmmmm… weird. We’ll leave it at that. Just trust me. He was weird. Something about the way he asked, the way he was watching me totally creeped me out and I was glad when he left. I also looked over my shoulder a time or two as I left the bookstore. He’s the only one that bothered me that much, but he’s not the only person who has ever asked me that question.

Some were mostly joking, I suspect. Joking or not, I tend to respond with something similiar. It’s all imagination. Writing about vampires doesn’t mean that I’ve been bitten by one. Most let it go with that, although some do pry and that point, I tend to get a little blunt. Okay, a lot blunt, but I’m a blunt type for the most part.

I’m a smart ass by nature, although I try to temper it a little when I’m wearing my author hat. I do try to act fairly professional (those who know me, stop snickering) I doubt I always succeed, but I do try.

But one of these days, I’m telling you, I’m going to answer Yep. And I have sex with werewolves, too.

Of course, the down side to that? There will be crazies who believe it.

I can’t imagine sitting at a table with people lined up and trying to relate to each and every personality as I sign a book for them. I’ve been in property management and customer service for several years and dealing with the public is always challenging.

Many times I’ve read a sexual passage and thought to myself the author HAD to have experienced something like it in their own life to make it so personal and real. Even so I’ve never once thought to email, comment or *shudder* ask (in person no less) the author about it. That’s rude, inappropriate and, frankly, a little creepy.

Rosie: me too, so it looks like the crazies are just saying what we all think sometimes…. (Oh and the better written it is, the more likely I am to wonder.)

Let me ask you a related question Shiloh (you must’ve been asked this before too). Do you feel weird about your friends and family reading your sex scenes?

hahaha! I think you should answer that you’ve had sex with werewolves. Just for amusement sake and see the reaction. Great post! I never think that what I read comes from first hand experience whatever it is. I just think the author has an incredible imagination.

Tumperkin…. friends, not so much… usually. Family? Oh, yeah. Except my mom. She’s not allowed to read them and I refuse to think that she does it and just doesn’t mention it. Besides, she doesn’t even know what sex is. Me… immature? Why yes I am. ;o)

    Rosie, it IS creepy. :O|

Kim… one of these days, I swear, I’m gonna.

Naw, you should tell ‘em that in your next book, the bad guy/girl is a sexual sadist, and not in the fun way. Then pause, and ask if they’d ever be interested in helping out with your research.

Scratch that, someone would say yes.

BTW, did you know one of your first books is going for almost a hundred bucks on Amazon?

My mom and I have a longstanding agreement that she won’t ever read my stuff. This is a good thing for both of us.

As for questions about inspiration, your answers have a lot in common with the answer James Patterson gave about his Alex Cross character. He’s always asked how he can accurately write from a black man’s POV. He answered that no one ever asks him how he can accurately write from a brutal serial killer’s POV. (Whether he writes them at all is a whole other subject.)

Ha ha, I like that answer. Just think of the publicity when the crazies start spreading it around!

When I read a great sex scene (or gory scene for that matter) I normally just assume that an author has a vivid imagination and leave it at that. Although there is one author I do wonder about (and not because I want to) because of her lovely habit of writing personal blogs and posting them for all to see. But for other authors, I make no assumptions about your personal lives.

I’ve never really understood some of the questions people ask authors, like the one about “where do you get your ideas?” Ideas would seem to me to be the easy part; it’s the writing them down that takes time and effort. But as far as personal experiences and writing, if someone has a tendency to write about a certain type of hero s, say lawyers or archaeologists, I might assume that was due to their personal experience , but sex? That’s not really any of my business, is it?

I would never ask questions like that. But, some people do have a lot of nerve.

Well my confession is there are scenes in a certain book out on Samhain that does contain things I have done or have had done to me.

But I am not gonna give the name.

I am sure there will be more but see I just tell my actual experiences to someone else and they pull out the parts they like and use the best bits. That makes it better because real life is so messy and requires handiwipes.

Personally, if your sex life is as hot as it is in your books, I rather not know. Why, you might ask? Because then I would hate you! I mean I think I have a great sex life but in no way is anything like what you write. Heck, some of those scenes take more stamina then what even I have….lol. I want to believe deep down that everyone is like me, having great sex but not phenemonal….it just wouldn’t be fair. Oh and on a sidenote, I’m not complaining whatsoever about my sex life(i think DH would kill me if I did) LOL

LOL! You are too funny! Unfortunately, some people would probably believe that you do have sex with werewolves. Of course, it may add to your mystique. Still, it is a shame that people can be so incredibly rude and thoughtless. Authors should be allowed their privacy just like anyone else. Nobody in their right mind is going to answer those kind of questions. These rude people need to figure that out.

Yes, but do you get asked the really important questions like:

Cut or uncut? Do werewolves really need to be circumsized?

Shave it or hide it? Does a heroine have to have a tidy lady garden or does her hero prefer a wild bush?

Bouncy or Firm? What does female were-titty do when a bitch is running through the woods? (I’ve never heard of a were described with a sports bra)

Oh, man, you’re kidding me! Sheesh…. Yeah, I just checked. Looks like somebody is trying to sell a Hunters book for that. Uh… why? It’s still in print!

And even if it wasn’t, I certainly wouldn’t pay that much money to read one of my books. Hmmmmm… maybe I shouldn’t say that!

if someone has a tendency to write about a certain type of hero s, say lawyers or archaeologists, I might assume that was due to their personal experience

Hence why I write a number of nurses. :o )

Of course, it may add to your mystique.

I keep telling people I want to have this air of mystery…

18If your books are as funny as this post I will be a very happy girl, because who doesn’t love werewolf sex, real or otherwise

My books have some tongue in cheek humor, but it’s more in the form of smart alec heroes and/or heroines. :OP I can’t really do comedy romance, but I can do some great one liners. ;)

Wicked, if somebody asked me some of those questions, I’d be backing away and digging out some keys or mace. That is just plain freaky.

Great post! Have you ever based a character on your friend’s or family?

Why… yes…. :OP Several as a matter of fact. But more often than not, I’ll see an interesting person or meet somebody that’s kind of off the wall and something about that person will scream… STORY!!!!

Thanks for dropping by, folks… :O) Glad you all enjoyed my rather off the wall since of humor. ;-)

I just blinked half a dozen times at the title of this post.

That aside, the story about the guy alone could almost make me write everything chaste and pure as to avoid that.

    Almost.

Which of your books is about a nurse? I’m a sucker for medical(ish) related romance.

    Paranormals are good, too.

my post isn’t showing up. Is the blog messing with me or what…

L, I’d like to blame it on Dionne, the title and all, but I sorta did that on my own. :OP

I have three or four books with either a doctor or a nurse in them, but that aspect doesn’t play into the story too much. The job rarely has as much affect on them as the romance or whatever hell I decide to heap on them.

I think the ones with nurses or doctors are

Susan, Cathie & Christy, thank you!

If your books are as funny as this post I will be a very happy girl, because who doesn’t love werewolf sex, real or otherwise?

:OP Well, I think I have some decent one liners and usually some very sarcastic characters, but I really can’t claim to write comedy romances. Sarcasm though? Excellent at that. ;)

Oh, that’s pretty close to TMI, Teddy… lol

I agree that you should tell them that you have sex with werewolves

    Gimme time!

Great post! Have you ever based a character on your friend’s or family?

Why… yes… :OP several times. But more often than not, I see somebody that just screams… CHARACTER… and they end up in a book.

because of her lovely habit of writing personal blogs and posting them for all to see

Yeah, some authors have yet to realize there is such a thing as too much information…

He answered that no one ever asks him how he can accurately write from a brutal serial killer’s POV.

Excellent answer… must remember that …

BTW, did you know one of your first books is going for almost a hundred bucks on Amazon?

LOL Thanks Shiloh you’ve provided more than just a little entertainment on this day.

You mentioned writing characters based on friends and family, but how about based on ex-friends and enemies? A harmless way of getting even and also potentially cathartic.

You could write that weirdo into your next book and make him a victim.

I know this is way off the subject but I loved your story in the Hot Spell anthology. What I want to know is that story related to any of your other writings and if so which one. Also their was a vampire by the name of Michael (I think) is he ever going to get his own story?

Hello, Shiloh! :) I’m an aspiring writer who writes some pretty hot stuff & that question is one of my biggest pet peeves. Why is it that no one believes it’s all in the imagination (except for friends & family who know me)?

The other question that boggles my mind is “How in the world did you come up with that?” I think I’ll use your answer from now on. :D

Thank you for being here today. I always love these question & answer blogs when an author visits. It makes me feel like you’re actually available & human. :D Hope you have a great night! :)

Ironic…I always want to know what books an author read as research for specific books. I know a good portion of folks can be *ahem* “bold” with the probing queries, but asking romance authors if they’re writing from experience is *SO* tacky.

  37. BevL(QB)
    37

You know, I’ve never figured out why people speculate about an author’s sex life if she writes erotic scenes, but never speculate where an author comes up with murder/mystery storylines.

As for asking an author where she gets her ideas, IF I ever asked that question, it wouldn’t be to find a general answer. What I would be looking for is, SPECIFICALLY, how did the idea for a particular story/character come to the author. So maybe that is what most other people mean when they ask it. So, if an author had a short anecdote ready (i.e. well I saw this guy on the news talking about…) that might satisfy the questioner.

Oh, and I’m a ho for werewolf stories. If you really do know a few werewolves, Shiloh, please let it be known that I’m looking forward to becoming a real life werewolf-ho. K?
