Horror Binge, Any Recs?

Pile of BooksFrom time to time, I get tired of reading the same old stuff and get the urge to read something completely different. It happened a few weeks ago and I can pinpoint the exact moment that it happened. I was in the middle of reading Die For Me by Karen Rose and was enjoying it at that point, but suddenly… I mean, out of the blue… I just got really annoyed. Don’t get me wrong, Karen Rose is a great writer and her books are generally lush and creepy and thrilling, but then I started thinking, “There’s a killer out there offing his victims using medieval torture devices and this stupid bitch (the heroine) is wondering if the hero thinks she’s a slut because she slept with her thesis advisor in grad school? Gay.” I put it down and couldn’t pick it back up. Instead I re-read The Complete Claudine by Colette, then Pricksongs and Descants by Robert Coover, then re-read Volumes 1-9 of Y: The Last Man. Of course, afterwards, I just had to re-read all of Preacher by Garth Ennis and the Cal McDonald Mysteries by Steve Niles. And duh, The Walking Dead by Rob Kirkman (which the geek-buddy-slash-lover-man fell in love with right away and absolutely insists it is better than Y. CD, you are ON CRACK).

And suddenly, I’m all about gore. Zombies, serial killers who wear their victims’ entrails around their necks like they’re drag queens in a burlesque act, and just all around fucked up shit happening to perfectly normal people! I’m re-reading all of my Stephen King, Bentley Little, Richard Laymon (RIP), Ramsey Campbell, Clive Barker… they’re my faves. And I’m running out, dudes. Help me out here. Any recs? Gross, spine-tingling, holy-shit-that-was-crazy kind of stuff? I’m all about atmosphere and character development (I gotta care about the people getting slashed, man. I’m nutty that way). Oh, and the geek-buddy-slash-lover-man lent me his copy of House of Leaves. Haven’t touched it. It looks intimidating. But he says it scared the shit out of him, so that’s right up my alley. Might have to try it after I finish reading The Vanishing by Bentley Little.

So, how about it? What’s your favorite horror novel of all time?

I’m reading Caitlin R. Kiernan’s work right now, and it’s quite good. (I started with Low Red Moon, and I’m now reading Threshold… though the actual order is the reverse. There was nothing in either book to indicate they were a part of a series. >_
They’re shelved under fantasy in most bookstores and I’ve heard her referred to as a fantasy author… but at least by what I’ve read, I’d put them under supernatural horror. Even “dark fantasy” isn’t quite that dark. :P

    Dean Koontz - Intensity

I read this book a long time ago and just picked up the audio book. The name says it all!

Clive Barker ~ Cabal - Which was used for the movie Nightbreed. A monster/romance.

Thomas Harris ~ Silence of The Lambs

Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z Brite is great! It’s about two serial killers who bond, and then fall in love over their mutual shared passion of killing ,and then eating and or having sex with the bodies of young street boys.

Drawing Blood by the same author is also really good. Not as gory but still really good!

Christopher Fowler is always a good bet. He is so twisted!
But I am Stephen King kind of gal. When I read the Stand I almost hid in my closet because I thought I was going to die from the disease. Man, that scene where they walk through the Lincoln Tunnel in NYC was a mind bender and especially because I go through there everyday!

I just finished Heartsick by Chelsea Cain. Female serial killer and the twisted relationship with the cop she tortured, very a la Red Dragon.

The Descent by Jeff Long…still freaks me out and I read it years ago.

    The Shining by Stephen King!

I second Jambrea’s INTENSITY. I love King, too, but I like the stuff that’s less gory and more fantasy/sf-ish, like The Stand and The Dark Tower series.

Can anything BE better than Y: THE LAST MAN? Shuh!

James Herbert–The Survivor, The Fog, Nobody True, and if you have a strong tummy, the Rats trilogy. If you want creepy, James Herbert is the master (better than King)

Book of the Damned by Fowler scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. I was freaking out everytime I saw a hearse for months after that. Of course I was young, but I read up about it on amazon and apparently it may be as bad as I thought. Ewww.

I’ve never read horror, but if you want a video game that’ll freak you out, try Fatal Frame. Andres got the creeps playing that so bad, he made me come sit with him.

Ooo! This is my field baby! I recommend Temple: Incarnations by Steven Savile (at www.apexbookcompany.com) It’s dark, got some gore, and interesting, ethereal feel and language that could make me come. ;) And if you like short stories try Read By Dawn vm 1 (which I’m in), it has many good stories from dark humor to ones that play with slasher flick tropes and ones that lean more toward dark fantasy. There’s also the Dexter series by Jeff Lindsay, it’s half mystery, but all horror, IMHO and also has lovely language.

Demon Seed, Watchers and Mutation by Koontz! Esp Demon Seed… “Give me back my hands!” *shudder*

A Wind in the Door by L’Engle frightened me.
And an unpublished book called “Concerto Diovolo” is probably the most frightening book I’ve ever read. It’s by Jill Maser. We used to crit for each other awhile back.
I enjoy Stephen King books. And Taylor Caldwell’s “Harvest Home.” Wow.

THE KEEPER by F. Paul Wilson blew me away! Two recent horror novels I was very impressed with were HEART SHAPED BOX by Joe Hill (Stephen King’s son) and THE KEEPER by Sarah Langan. Very creepy, atmospheric, and kept me turning pages. I’m also a big Dean Koontz fan, and his earlier books are definitely horror. (They’re more mainstream suspense now.)

Anything by John Connolly. The Killing Kind, Every Dead Thing, Bad Men.. His scary stories have this lyrical, beautiful quality to the writing which somehow makes them even creepier.

Man, I haven’t read a good horror book in ages. I do love to read King’s It from time to time. But not so much into horror lately.

I can send you Threshold by Caitlin Kiernan, if you’re interested (I’ve got a quick write-up about it on my blog right now.) I won’t be re-reading it soon, just because I have no time — but I thought it was great, if very, very weird. I’ve got the next two on my TBR.

I’ve been trying (and failing) to get through Lisey’s Story by SK, but I want to try out his son’s book — I’ve heard good things. Also, Heartsick.

…and now I have to go look up some of the other recommendations on here.

I third Intensity, by Dean Koontz. Koontz lately seems to be losing his touch, but that book is one of his best. There’s a new book out, called The Road by Cormac McCarthy (Oprah poisoned it with her book club recommendation), that freaked me out. And finally, I was completely freaked out by The Lovely Bones, although it’s not officially a horror novel.

Late to the party but I love Elemental by Michael McDowell, and I’m not even sure there was really a ghost in it. In fact, I love everything by Michael McDowell who also wrote the screenplay for Beetlejuice as well as some other good southern horror: Amulet and the six volume Black River series are a couple of favorites. He died way too young. But so did a lot of talented young people in those days.
