PC & KFC… the Wacky Interview

In celebration of the release of BETRAYED, book 2 [WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS for Book 1] in the young adult paranormal series, THE HOUSE OF NIGHT, the multi-talented, awesome PC Cast and her daughter and coauthor the chic, oh-so-cool Kristin Cast are going to interview each other.

If you’re asking yourself, “What the hell is The House of Night?” here’s a quick blurb:

The HOUSE OF NIGHT novels are set in a world much like ours – except in Zoey Redbird’s world vampyres have always existed. Kristin and I have created a new vampyre mythos where our vamps have a biological reason for their existence. They have established a complex matriarchal society ruled by High Priestesses who give their allegiance to the vampyre goddess, Nyx. Sixteen year old Zoey steps into this mystical society after being Marked to begin the Change from human to vampyre – a Change that takes about four years to complete. But not everyone who is Marked will Change – many fledglings cannot survive the physiological adaptations and will die. As if that’s not stress enough, Zoey has been Marked as special by Nyx and given powers never before seen in a fledgling. When all she really wants is to fit in her new life, Zoey comes to understand that she must assume the leadership of the school’s most elite club, the Dark Daughters. Will Zoey have the strength to do what Nyx asks of her? Will Zoey even survive the Change?

And heeeeeeeeeeeeere’s PC AND KFC!

Questions from PC to Kristin (better known as Chicken Frances because her initials are KFC):

1. Okay, you say that you want Zoey to end up with Heath. I say, uh no. But, pretending for a moment you can actually get your way, WHY do you think she should be with Heath?

Easy, peasy. I like me some Heath! I know the real Heath as a person, not just a character, and I could eat him with a spoon.

By the way, this brunette always gets what she wants. Run! You’ve created a monster!

2. Who is your favorite character in House of Night and why? How about your least fav and why?

I would have to say that my fav character would be Zoey, because she’s pretty much me and I really like myself. I don’t really have a least favorite character. If I did, I’d probably kill them. Heehees.

3. I know because I’ve listened to you over and over and over and…well, you get the picture, that there are teenage issues that really push your buttons. Clearly you have been raised well. Tell me again because I’m getting old and keep forgetting to take my ginkgo biloba about one of these issues that we/you have been sure to include in our books.

Excuse me while I fetch my soapbox. I love to stress the fact, (yes, I did use the word “fact”), that most teenage girls are not whores like the Oprah show tends to portray them. Oprah, if you see this, I love you and please invite us to your show.

4. If you were Marked what would your tattoo look like?

Umm, a really pissed off Phoenix? You might want to check back with me later; I’m pretty indecisive.

5. So who was this boy/man you were watching football with this weekend? I’m just asking for research purposes.

You are so nosy. And one of the best parts about not living at home is that I don’t have to tell you every little detail of MY life. Freedom. Freedom. Freedom. America is such a wonderful place.

Questions from Kristin to her Mam (a.k.a. PC)

1. If you were a bug, what kind of bug would you be, and how would you like to get squashed?

God, you’re so weird. A bug? Okay, I would be a SPIDER (aside – Chicken is mortally afraid of spiders) and I would be a big one (although let’s be clear about the fact that I’m not “big” as a human). Anyway, I’d get squashed the way I’ve squashed countless numbers of spiders in your life. I’d totally freak out a scaredy little brunette haired, brownish skinned girl, she’d scream for her Mam, and then her lovely Mam (dressed fashionably) would rush in and squash me in one swift, yet graceful movement with her hand. The end.

2. Now that you are having a mid-life crisis, quickly approaching menopause, and quite possibly on your way into diapers, what do you plan on doing with the rest of your years as you float toward the oh, so great white light?

This one is easy peasy. I’m going to continue doing what I’ve been doing: dating the sexy twenty-somethings I’ve brainwashed you into believing are too “bad” for you to date. And when I get REALLY old you’ll be my nurse and I’ll expect you to change my diapers whilst you rotate out my red wine I.V.

3. If you could be any one of our characters, who would you be and why?

Well, (as you already know) I kinda made Prof Penthesilea me, but if I could really be a character I think I’d be Aphrodite. She’s not what she seems and she goes through a big growth process, which I like. I also appreciate her biting sense of sarcastic humor. Plus, she’s rich and has excellent hair. Not that I’m shallow or anything…

4. Anyone who knows you also knows your views on the organized religion that takes place in the Bible Belt. To those who have unfortunately not been graced by your presence, would you enlighten them to your reasons behind creating the People of Faith and the drama that surrounds them?

As my lovely daughter knows, I abhor the hypocritical, narrow-minded viewpoint of mainstream “religion” and their “If you don’t believe exactly as WE (the ‘we’ being defined as whatever denomination happens to have the soapbox) believe you’re evil, sinful, God hates you and you’re going to hell.” I don’t believe in religion by fear. I also understand the sociological setting of the Bible – the blatantly patriarchal sociological setting. I don’t buy it for today’s world. In my mind God’s a girl. I believe there is more than one correct answer about religion. Every day in my high school classroom I see how the religion of fear and judgment messes up kids, so when Kristin and I sat down to write a novel for young adults I felt strongly (as does she) that we must to speak against the hypocrisy of the bullshit we see too often here in the Bible Belt. So the People of Faith were born from actual parents and teenagers Kristin and I have dealt with.

5. I like to watch shows like Jerry Springer, Dr. Phil, and Maury to make me feel better about my life. What show(s) do you watch that make you feel better about your “normal” life?

Jeesh, you’re so twisted. You know I hate it when you watch Jerry Springer. Shows that make me feel good about my life are (and this won’t surprise you) 1) Smallville – because I BELIEVE IN SUPERMAN. 2) Nip/Tuck – because I’m going to get me some plastic surgery when I get old. 3) America’s Next Top Model – because I love the drama, and I can go to school the next day and my sophomore girls and I can gossip about who said what about who and who did what to who, but we’re not talking about ‘real people.’ 4) South Park – because…um…well… Okay, I decline to comment about my last choice because YOU GOT ME HOOKED ON THAT HORRIBLE SHOW.

Ummm… Thanks, PC & Kristin. That was illuminating. Love you guys!

One lucky commenter will win a copy of Betrayed. So comment to your heart’s content. Go nuts.

Oh, and for some reason, I felt compelled to attach this song to this post. Don’t ask me why.

    Hi,
I love the interview, sounds a lot like me and my mom (but I’m almost 34 so not quite the same). I wanted to say how much I have enjoyed the House of Night series. I got advanced copies of both of them and they both got high marks, Betrayed especially (5 stars, total keeper). You guys totally surprised me, what a twist to the series. I can’t wait for Chosen. They are so good that I went out and bought copies of them! I also love the Summoning series, they are on my keeper shelves as well. So keep them coming and I will buy every single one.

Wow! I admire that you’re a mother-daughter team. My mom’s not nearly cool enough to write with me, ‘course I think she’s a little scared of the things I write about. :)

I LOVE vampire fiction — thanks for bringing this to my attention. The interview was the best I’ve ever seen — what a cool idea. I especially like the question that starts “now that you’re quickly approaching menopause…” That had me LOLing.
