Bonnie Dee on Love Triangles

Whenever a couple on a TV drama gets close to contentment, what’s the writing team’s first line of defense in breaking up the tedium of actual happiness? That’s right, our three-cornered friend–the love triangle.

Dawson-Joey-Pacey, Meredith-McDreamy-Addison, Buffy-Angel-Spike (although technically Buffy was never involved with both vamps at once) [ed. note: don’t forget rory-dean-jess!], there’s nothing like the drama of a romantic choice to catch peoples’ interest even if the resolution is a foregone conclusion. There’s always the possibility that the hapless heroine might choose the man who’s clearly wrong for her, instead of the guy who appears to be her polar opposite yet understands her in deeper ways than anyone else ever could.

My latest book, Perfecting Amanda is a love triangle in which you’ll be rooting for… well, hopefully rooting for the man Amanda ends up with. But I hope I’ve written it so that readers will feel sympathy for all the characters involved in the painful situation.

Here’s a little bit about Perfecting Amanda.

One woman, two men—the choice of a lifetime and the chance for a perfect future.

When Amanda McCormick heads west as to create a home of her own and begin a “perfect” marriage with a man she’s never met, gambler Spencer Teague intercepts her. Pretending to be her fiancé, he tricks her into surrendering her virginity.

Amanda hides the misguided affair and forges a relationship with her young husband, Travis. But her secret haunts her when she learns she’s pregnant. Meanwhile, Spencer is haunted by visions of a little girl who demands he find and help Amanda.

Their lives entwine as the three come together in an unexpected relationship that touches—and tortures—them all. Amanda questions whether perfection is attainable and if it’s possible to love two very different kinds of men.

Author Beth Williamson says:

Perfecting Amanda is an emotional ride that swept this reader along, a gripping historical that allows you to peek into the life a strong woman lived so long ago. Get ready y’all, you’re in for a story that won’t let you go.

I used to live my weeks waiting to watch Dawson-Joey-Pacey. Then it was Meredith-McDreamy-Addison, and now Izzie-George-Callie.

Right now I’m really into the one on Torchwood between Gwen, Owen, and Rhys. Burn Gorman is just… yum. He looks like a villain in some ways: mean, sly and a little bit bad, the one who never gets the girl, but does despicable things on the outside chance one of his ideas will bear fruit. On the show he plays a mouthy smartass whose charm falls on the sexy side of pugnacious.

Although other people will disagree with me, I like the triangle between Morelli, Steph, and Ranger, too. I think it’s cool she doesn’t choose and doesn’t have to, since as I see it, the guys answer disparate needs. Morelli represents house and hearth, security, and Ranger represents excitement. I think Steph needs both of them, and why should she have to pick just because people say she should? If she can have her cake and eat it too, more power to her!

I do get sick of her never improving at her job, though. But that’s another issue entirely.

    Favourites is Casablanca (Rick-Isla-Victor).

Least favourite is Gone with the Wind (Rhett-Scarlett-Ashley) ‘cos Ashley is so freakin’ lame.

I agree with Ann… the whole Morelli-Steph-Ranger shebang! I’ve always thought that Steph should get both… if I had to choose, it would be Ranger though… my gf would choose Morelli… I told her I have the whole secure and at-home man and all that entails, I prefer the danger & excitement of Ranger… but I’d still like to have both! :D LOL!

Well, there’s the infamous JR/Sue Ellen/Cliff triangle from Dallas. I always thought that was stupid because Cliff was such a loser. But the Bobby/Pam/Mark triangle was boring because they were both good guys. Come to think of it, I think every woman and man on that show was involved in a triangle at some point– even Miss Ellie. Um… am I the only one around here old enough to remember Dallas?

I DO like the Jack/Kate/Sawyer triangle on Lost.

And (yes, Bam, I’m saying it, so deal with it) I ADORE the Jean-Claude/Anita/Richard triangle AND the Micah/Anita/Richard triangle. In fact the Richard/Micah snark sessions have been my favorite parts of the last few LKH books.

Torchwood is on the BBC channel? I saw that title in the guide as I was going through channels. I’ll check it out if it’s good.

Sorry, Jodis, Izzie-George-Callie is the worst triangle ever! They never should’ve gone there. George and Izzie were friends. Couldn’t they have left it at that, at the refreshing possibility of a man and a woman simply being best friends without getting sex involved? It burns me watching the whole sorry thing unfold.

Tumperkin, agreed–there was never a lamer lame than Ashley in GWTW. What an insipid character he was. Clearly no contest between him and colorful, charismatic Rhett.

Help me out. I’m lost with this triangle, Morelli-Steph-Ranger. I assume it’s something I haven’t read that everyone else knows about.

Bonnie, I watch Torchwood on People+Arts here in Mexico. I’m not sure what station it’s broadcast on in the states. We’re about 1/3 of the way through season 1, I believe, and yeah, I like it a lot. It’s a Dr. Who spinoff, but you don’t need to like Dr. Who to enjoy Torchwood.

I never liked DW in fact, but I’m totally digging this. The characters are great, though, and the writing is very snappy. It’s set in Cardiff, so it’s very atmospheric as well. Different than an American show, but I loves it.

The hardcore Who-files are up in arms, however, saying the show is crap because it has too much gratuitous sex, snogging, and bad language. Since the show seems pretty tame to me, I can’t imagine how boring DW must be!

And the Ranger-Step-Morelli triangle is from the Janet Evanovich books. Steph is the worst bounty hunter who ever lived. I don’t actually know what genre I’d call them, but they’re very light and fun. I call them my “mac and cheese” reads because I always know what I’m gonna get when I pick one up. Some people object to the sameness and say it’s gotten stale / boring, but to me, they’re comfort book. I don’t want to be surprised in a Stephanie Plum book. I’d be pissed as all hell if Janet killed Grandma Mazur off, for instance.

I actually have no really canon triangles.

I’ve been all over Doctor/Jack/Ianto and Nine/Jack/Rose of Doctor Who and Torchwood fanfiction.

I hated, *hated* Dawson’s Creek with a tremendous passion. I just feel I should throw that in there.

I have to agree with BevL(QB), I love the Micah/Anita/Jean-Claude triangle. I adore the semi-triangle between Stephanie Meyers’ Jacob/Bella/Edward…I’m still rooting for Jacob. The Erik/Sookie/Bill triangle is also one of my top 5. For t.v. triangles…shamefully, I’m still into the Dawson/Joey/Pacey thing. Yeah, I know, how lame. lol. triangles, gotta love em.

Well I love my soaps so I would have to go with:

    Lucky/Liz/Jason GH
This is should I stick with my cop husband or go with the hot hitman who also happens to be my babies daddy story line. It is full of things I love like long lingering glances and angst filled fights.

    Maddie/Noah/Luke ATWT
This I love as well because it is my “yes I am totally straight girlfriend” vs the “look how cute and funny I am” gay friend. Currently it has gone with the Noah and Luke angle which has filled me with joy.

I loved the interaction between the characters in Maya Banks’ “For Her Pleasure”. What a wonderful menage book!!! I could feel with Kit as she loved both men (Mac and Ryan) from a child. Ryan loves Kit but knows that Mac loves her more. He decides to let her go but it causes havoc in their relationship. The way Ms Banks handles the whole situation is steamy to say the very least. In addition to these characters’ story, there is also another one tied in the book. That’s my favorite love triangle.

The Torchwood trio are certainly hot…. on a recent talkshow the star described the crew as “omnisexual”, and I can see where that might get the DW fans a little distubed, but I like it. I agree about GWTW… sad when Scarlet has bigger balls than Ashley.
One hopeless relationship (mostly one-sided) that always got to me was the Eowyn/Aragorn/Arwen triangle. When I was younger I always wanted Eowyn to get the man, now I wonder about the possibilities of a trio.

Oh, okay. I read the first of the Stephanie Plum books, but although I thought it cute, it didn’t seize me enough to read any more.

This wasn’t an ongoing triangle, it only lasted a three-episode arc, but does anyone remember Moonlighting when Maddie had to choose between David and ???? played by Mark Harmon? I watched the show on dvd semi-recently so it lodged in my mind. I still found the angry sex scene(very risque for its time) between Maddie and David (Cybil & Bruce) to be very, very hot!

Evanovich’s Stephanie/Morelli/Ranger. It would be hard to choose, but I think Ranger is more exciting and also more supportive of Stephanie.

Oooh, I’ll have to agree with Jaded Bee — the Eric/Sookie/Bill triangle is a great one. I’m also liking the Marissa/Butch/Vishous idea from post #9. Giving Marissa the boot could be a reeeeeeally interesting twist!

Oh the agony of having two guys chasing after you! Ah….to have such problems.

How could you forget about the Cordy-Xander-Willow-Oz triangle (square?) Bam, I’m disappointed in you! Or Willow-Tara-Oz one, that was particularly compelling.

I’m cheering for Ranger, but I know he won’t win. Damn Morrelli (though a very fun character)

But my new vamp show that I watch “Blood Ties” has the hottest love triangle evah! Henry-Vicky-Cop dude (Mike?) yeah, Henry is a hot vampire and the bastard son of King Henry VIII. SOLD!

I’m not so sure that I’m sold on the idea of love triangles. I mean how often does that happen in real life? Maybe I’m skeptical because I’ve never seen it in action Damn you TV!

I know some Korean movies have the triangle relationships. I read book 1 in the series of Stephanie Plum’s series, so I’m not sure who I’m voting for. LOL!

I have to throw in another popular-though some might call it unpopular-show called Roswell and a big reason why the show didn’t make it
    Liz-Max-Tess.

I Love menage and triangles especially, but if not written correctly it can So ruin a show or story and this show was is a good example. I’m not saying that following a fan’s reaction is a must to entertain but when the same old contride and overly used storyline is used it can drive more people away than to entice them to stay and watch the story/show develope.

In this case for those that don’t know, the writers didn’t know where to take the story and decided to throw in ‘I’m your wife from your past life come to reclaim your love.’ They had tons of options where they could’ve gone being a sci-fi series but in the end made Tess evil only to try to redeem her in a lame way. Its a sad thing when such potential is waited.

“I hated, *hated* Dawson’s Creek with a tremendous passion. ”

Dawson’s Creek was definitely a guilty pleasure for me–like The OC. Both shows I knew were crap but couldn’t stop watching. But Pacey…come on, he was just so great, and for once the creator listened to the masses with good results, the Best Friend Guy ultimately gets the girl.

Oz-Willow-Tara, how could I forget. There were only a few (two?) episodes where they actually shared screen time, but it was a very intriguing dynamic.

I’ve already gotten some flak from a couple of reviewers about the way the triangle in my story, “Perfecting Amanda” plays out. It’s inevitable not everyone will like it. Better negative reaction than none, I guess. If you’ve read the book (or decide to in future), please drop me a line at bondav40@yahoo.com to let me know what you thought.

I love triangles. Ah, the tension, the angst! My current favorite has got to be the Apollo/Starbuck/Dee triangle on Battlestar Galactica. While many argue that there is no real tension between Bamber and Sackhoff (Apollo and Starbuck) I disagree. I see it, feel it and love every second of Apollo’s angsty crap. I love Dee…but I love Starbuck. For a minute there it seemed like it was resolved, but I don’t think it will ever be.

I’m so damn sorry the series is ending, but am glad at the same time that the creators have chosen to end it while it’s still relevant.

Re: the Buffy (and Other Vampire) Polygons–

I completely concur about the Oz-Willow-Xander-Cordelia triangle/square. ‘Cause Willow and Oz were so good together, but I’d been rooting for Willow and Xander since day one– agony! But I found the Oz-Willow-Tara triangle less compelling. It’d have been more interesting, I think, if Oz had reappeared sooner, before the Willow/Tara relationship had solidified. By the time he returned there really wasn’t a question any more, it was just a matter of his finding out and everyone dealing.

As to Blood Ties, I have sort of the same problem there as I did with the early LKH books. (I can’t speak to the more recent ones.) To me there’s just no contest between Henry and … uh… the other guy–uh, Mike. (See?! I can’t even remember his name, and evidently neither could SweetNSourGirl! :) ) Ditto Jean-Claude and Richard- Richard just couldn’t hold a candle to Jean-Claude, so the whole situation wasn’t so much interesting to me as irritating.

And perhaps therein lies the danger of the Love-Triangle? How does a writer (or a group of them, in the sense of television) make 2 characters who are different enough to be their own people, yet similar enough to be hard to choose between? Especially since when we’re talking text, readers of romance novels are generally placing themselves into the position of the heroine, so for the story to work the _reader_ has to find both potential heroes worthwhile/desirable.

  27. Eilonwy
    27

(Oh! I should mention that the love triangle in the Tanya Huff Blood Ties books is less irritating in that Mike is more interesting. But it’s also less agonizing in the books. I haven’t finished them yet, but so far anyway.)

  28. Bonnie Dee
    28

Making the two love choices different from one another isn’t as much of a problem as the delicate balance of making both likeable and choose-able. Hopefully, if you’ve done it right there will be rabid camps supporting both contenders with heartfelt reasons of why the heroine should be with so-and-so. (although I personally couldn’t imagine anyone rallying to the cause of that weinie, Dawson!)

  29. Jaded Bee
    29

Exactly! I was always pro Pacey and Dawson who? He was too geeky and just tended to complicate things. I was always like, let Jen have him, Pacey’s so much sexier. Joshua Jackson played a werewolf in the movie cursed. You should see it, it was pretty good, even though Christina Ricci or whatever her name is, is the leading lady. Joshua makes the movie rock.

I refuse to get involved in the Ranger/Steph/Morelli madness. I think they ought to fire that bitch Stephanie for incompetence and Ranger and Morelli can ride the Ducati off into the sunset. Yea, that’s what I’m talkin about.

  33. SweetNSourGirl

Haha lisabea! That’s an ending I’d cheer for…hope they’re riding towards me!

  34. Eilonwy
    34

Making the two love choices different from one another isn’t as much of a problem as the delicate balance of making both likeable and choose-able.

I suppose this is actually partly what I meant. But as much the rabid camps are good, it still needs to be believable that the heroine would/could fall in love with two very different men for it to work, I think. (Not so much that the reader needs to be in love with both.) If the reader is saying, “What does [$Heroine] see in [Hero1]!?” then there’s not much of a triangle. (Naturally, if there *is* only one hero and there’s still no reason for the heroine to fall in love, the book isn’t going to work either…)

  35. Bonnie Dee
    35

“Maybe I’m aging myself, but I loved the triangle on “My So Called Life”. Angela!Jordan!Brian!”

How could I forget to include that? Except Brian wasn’t really a part of the triangle, since Angela had no real interest in him. But, oh my God, I’m such a geek…I just finished watching MSCL for like the fiftyfifth time this past week. Every now and then I need my Jared Leto fix and pull out the DVDs. I used to believe he was a stoner, but now I think the boy was just not bright.

And every damn time the non-ending catches me off guard–as if I didn’t know it was coming–and I’m sad for the further seasons we never got.

“Joshua Jackson played a werewolf in the movie cursed.”
Did see this and it wasn’t bad. But let’s face it, I mostly watched because JJ was in it. Hey, what’s your Christina Ricci problem? I like the girl, always have ever since she was a big-eyed tot.

As for Jack-Kate-Sawyer, I might be more invested if I could stand either Kate or Jack, but the pair of them are my least favorite Lostians. That woman bugs the crap out of me, and I’m not much fonder of bossy, listen-to-me-I’m-the-LEADER Jack.

I don’t often read love-triangles, at least not in romance. I often feel the author is beating me over the head with how much better the ‘right guy’ is than the other guy.
I do have a soft spot in my heart for the first triangle I’ve read, a YA book aptly named ‘triangle’ (I don’t remember who the author was). It wasn’t really a romance. It was about three teenagers who were in some way connected to a dying kid and were dealing with his approaching death together and each on their own. Each of them was in love with someone who was in love with someone else, which could have resulted in a huge angstfest, but turned out to be pretty touching. Or at least that’s the way I remember it:)

Oh, and I totally agree about Roswell.

  39. Bonnie Dee
    39

“Or at least that’s the way I remember it:)”
Yeah, it’s always kind of sad when you remember a book from your youth as really profound or touching, you reread it as an adult and find it was banal or cheesy. Like they say, you can’t go home.
Depends though, some books do hold up to the test of time.

“I often feel the author is beating me over the head with how much better the ‘right guy’ is than the other guy.”
Won’t get that with my book. The better man is the one not chosen and the ‘right guy’ is a real dick at the beginning and only partially redeemed by the end. (Can you say “Spike”?) This is what several critics of the book had a problem with–the non-conformity of my anti-hero into a conventional romance stereotype.

  40. Christina
    40

Bonnie, we love your anti-heroes. Conformity gets boring… Ignore the bad critics… they don’t know what they’re talking about! Keep up the good work!

I didn’t mean that I like the Izzie-George-Callie triangle. It’s there and I’m wondering where they’ll go with it. I was actually pretty appalled that they went that direction at the end of last season. I want Izzie to find herself a good guy again.

I agree wtih Dani on the Lucky/Liz/Jason triangle. That’s what of the few reasons that I watch the show.
