What Really Happened to the Cravens?

I was inspired by this post I saw on Pajiba, about “What Really Happened to Lloyd Dobler“—

And what these women also fail to understand, at least in my opinion, is that many of these lofty expectations are built around a myth that Lloyd Dobler and Diane Court — after the ding of the seat belt light, and after they safely landed in London — managed to stay together and live happily ever after, populating the world with ‘Lil Doblers and spending their golden years in a rocking chair sipping on Country Time Lemonade. Well, here’s a reality check, Captain Stupendously Obvious: Over half of all marriages end in divorce and, I suspect, that number is even higher when the two spouses are high-school sweethearts. Of course, it’s no secret that marriages don’t always last, but even when they do, arguments and lifestyle compromises are inevitable. If Lloyd Dobler and Diane Court were still together today (they are not, I conjecture), you can bet your ass that Lloyd is selling or processing something sold or processed to take care of Lloyd, Jr. and provide Diane with the sort of comforts she was accustomed to when her father was bilking the nursing home. You don’t give up a house in the ‘burbs with a jukebox in it to live off the fat of the land and watch your husband toil away with a failed kickboxing career (“sport of the future?” Ha!), now do you? Not even for the freakin’ Ice Man.

—and it had me wondering what happened to the more popular romance novel pairings after The Happily Ever After. Are they still together? What happened to Derek and Sara? What kind of things do they fight about? Do you think they bicker about Derek’s paunch and Sara’s widening hips? What about Sam and Leda? Do you think Leda screams bloody murder at Sam every time she accidentally steps on one of the ninja stars he had left laying around on the floor? Do you think Webb and Roanna are still together or did the cousin-fucking get old right quick? Thoughts? What happened to your favorite romance novel pairings? Let’s hear it!

Oh, and tomorrow, I’m going to have my first boy-guest author ever! His name is Mark Henry and he is hilarious. So watch out for him!

Well… college freshman sweethearts, still happy after 21 years, so I have no trouble at all envisioning my favorite romance couples HEA forever.

And it’s clear that Diane would be the one making the big bucks, and Lloyd the support staff. So they’re good.

I’m not in love with Lloyd Dobbler. I’m in love with Lane Meyer.

Lloyd is good and all, but Lane has that bitchen Camaro.

Honestly, though, that was always my problem with Say Anything. As a chick of a certain age I’m required by law to adore the movie, and I do, but it always bugged me that you knew they’d probably break up.

I’m just back from Hawaii and I indulged in one of my favoritest of all favorite pleasures: re-reading The Shadow and the Star while there. (I highly recommend it!) Sam and Leda will always live in a magical kind of place in my mind and there’s no convincing me that they’re not getting along swimmingly. As for the ninja stars, Leda might make some genteel hints to Sam and in turn Sam would acknowledge and apologize for anything he’s done to violate Leda’s code of proper behavior (there might be an ironic tone to his apology, but Leda would accept it nevertheless). There would be no yelling between those two.

As for Lloyd and Diane - I read some fan fiction last spring or summer on the topic of their relationship as of the 20 year reunion for their graduating class which has stuck with me because it seemed true to the characters to me. The story went with the idea that they were together for a couple of years in London, then various things tore them apart and she went on to marry someone else. Now that marriage is over and Diane still occupies a large part of Lloyd’s heart so he’s wondering if they’ve now matured to a place where they can try again. It was a melancholy yet hopeful view of their relationship, which I quite like.

What do you mean? My fave romance couples are all living happily ever after in the Land of Shangrila. Sometimes Cian and Jessi from Moning’s Spell of the Highlander go out for dinner with Kenny and Savannah from Brockmann’s Out of Control. Date night, you know.

(Tried to make with the linkage and couldn’t get it to work. I stoopid.)

Most of my favourite couples are of course living happily ever after.
I say most because I’m fairly certain that a couple of months after their story ended, (Shannon McKenna’s) Raine would have applied for a restraining order on Seth after he locked her in her bedroom for a week for not telling him she had nipped down to the shops for some bread and milk.

That book is my guiltiest pleasure. Sigh.

Samuel and Leda had awesome ninja babies, I know that much.

I don’t so much what happened to the couples I love, so much as to the ones I hated, being which those all died a mean, fiery death and will not be plaguing the Victorian era with their stupidity anymore.

Sometimes, it’s just best to ignore the HEA.

I’ve always been a big supporter of the Happily Enough for Now ending. It’s far more realistic and generally it makes more sense.

Mark Henry rocks! Can’t wait to see what he has to say. Probably something hilrarious about zombies. :)

Webb and Roanna are one of my very fave couples. Since this is one of the few books I’ve read more than once I have given their future some thought.

Of course they have two little Tallants which Webb is thrilled about because he has a little Webb to raise to take over the family dynasty. Although Roanna has her horses as a diversion she gets distressed as Webb begins to drift further and further away as he obsesses over business. It isn’t until he realizes that Roanna is spending a lot of time with the new trainer and taking trips entering the horses in high stakes races that Webb wakes up and begins to court and woo her like she deserved to be the first time around.

[I’m resending this comment; it looks like it didn’t take the first time.]

I (heart) Lloyd. And damnnit, NOTHING will ever convince me that he and Diane are anything but perfect together and happy and enjoying life, even through the rough patches. He gave her his heart, she gave him a pen…and then, after that, they worked it out. Communication, baby. Lloyd is my ultimate good guy hero. And he’s happy. With Diane. I know it.

And you know what? I married my high school crush. We just had our 10-year anniversary. And I’m pursuing the career of my dreams (fine, it might not be the sport of the future, but that’s okay), and he’s completely supportive. (Granted, I still have a day job, so I bet Lloyd had to do something to help contribute to the family income while going after his dream too. Reality check, even in the perfect HEA.)

    It’s possible. It’s my life.

And I say that Lloyd and Diane do go on to live happily ever after.

PS: Mark Henry is pretty damn awesome. The best zombedy writer out there!

After Erin sneaks out the window and undergoes plastic surgery so she no longer matches the photo Connor is flashing around as he tries to find her, she and Raine can open a group home for McKenna’s heroines.

Do you think Leda screams bloody murder at Sam every time she accidentally steps on one of the ninja stars he had left laying around on the floor?

I’m not too fond of ninjas because of what they usually represent, but any true martial artist has respect for his weapons and would not leave them lying around… Or is that just the martial arts nut I work with who keeps his katanas in a glass case?

I hope Lloyd wised up and dumped Diane Court shortly after they got to London. She was extremely annoying and NOT WORTHY of the goodness that is John Cusak. He needed to run, not walk, back to Lili Taylor’s Corey and beg forgiveness for not seeing how perfect they are together.

Teresa, the only problem is that Corey would have started writing songs about Lloyd. Playing “In Your Eyes” is one thing. But an entire soundtrack of “Lloyd” songs? Gah…

Corey would have outgrown the song writing thing. Ione Skye would always be stiff as a board. ;)

I’m that kind of person who is not interested in the characters after the movie/story has ended, although sometimes a well-told story featuring a couple that I am absolutely sure will break up (like Alec and Richard St Vier in Ellen Kushner’s Swordspoint) often leave me with a bittersweet kind of joy at the end of the story. (Ellen Kushner then proceeded to break up those two so that they will be miserable ever after in the next two sequels but THAT is a different thing.)

What is the purpose of that initial post about how high-school relationships tended not to last anyway? Pointing out the obvious, no?
