I can see the CBC offices from my office, but I rarely go in that direction. Can't say the monument is ringing a bell, Anne.

I haven't seen those commercials in awhile, for a time there, they were on heavy routation in the Toronto area. As I was watching them here I thought about those VW commericals, too.

Wow. Shudder. Well those certainly get their point across. I'm sure if they tried that in the U.S., people would get them yanked off the air.

I'm not surprised the ads are from Canada. When I was in Toronto, we came across a monument to workplace fatalities, nearish the CBC building. There were lots of plaques or tiles commemorating fatal workplace accidents going back decades; many of the deaths were grisly. Like those ads, it's a grim reminder that people can get suffocated, crushed, shot, and worse on the job. Does anyone know the name of that memorial? I'd love to learn more about it.

In a way, this is worse than those stupid Volkswagen commercials that have made me scared to have an inane conversation while driving for fear it will cause a hideous crash.

True, Bettie. I live in fear of four-way stops!

I was so mortified when I saw this on TV! I seriously sat staring at the TV for minutes after the piece had ended....

But you're right, it was morbidly fascinating, I couldn't look away...

State of California: you are SO weird, but in a good way

I thought it was California, too. ::sigh:: I guess this is just another reason for me to be envious of Canada.

But, hey, Canada! Not cool, dudes. In a way, this is worse than those stupid Volkswagen commercials that have made me scared to have an inane conversation while driving for fear it will cause a hideous crash.

I live in Canada, but I've NEVER seen those commercials. Holy Crap, indeed!

To be honest, when I saw that first one, the first idea I got was that this commercial was for something totally different.

With her talking about her fiance, and using the quotation marks around "accident" - I initially thought this was an eye-opening human rights commercial about the prevalence of "kitchen accidents" in East Asia, where women who couldn't pay their dowries were burned with hot oil or grease, while the perpetrators were never charged because the police would write it off as a "kitchen accident".

Until I saw the other commercials, I considered this to be a way to get North Americans to care about the violence against women in East Asia!

Even knowing the real context, it's still a thought-provoking commercial!
