Chris Marie Green Talks About Crushes A Sane Person Would Never Acknowledge

So here’s the thing. Like Ms. Nalini Singh (Hey! Love the Psy series and your novel is coming out on the same day as my MIDNIGHT REIGN… plug), I’m waiting for my new book to hit the shelves on February 5. I’ve also been in a writing cave since Christmas. No days off, immersed in the world of Vampire Babylon. There, the sky is always dark, the vamps are ever hungry, and the work is eternal.

So what’s a whiner like me to do but search for a fun topic for Dionne’s merry band of readers?

I riffled my brain for something to say, but since Valentine’s Day is almost here and I’m in the midst of writing about this hot yet warped relationship between a guy better known as “The Voice” and his human vampire hunter employee, my mind gravitated toward just that… warped romance. To be more specific, I’m going to embarrass myself and reveal a few crushes that I’ve been afraid to admit until now.

So feel free to join in! You’ll no doubt recognize some of the categories. We’ve all dealt with most of them. At least, I hope. If not, I’m going to dig myself a hole somewhere in the Mojave Desert and pray that I perish quickly.

And here…we…go….

Category 1: The “This Was The First Clue That I Would Have Issues” Crush

When I was, like, six years old, I had a thing for Robin. Yes, that one. He of the prancing and POW!ing. He of the somewhat unsettling relationship with the Caped Crusader. But I was little, and I wore my own set of tights during special occasions. Like I could catch the subtleties.

Category 2: The “God, Hanging Out With Him Would Be a Blast But My Parents Would Kick Him Out the Door Within Four Minutes” Geek-Crush

Kevin Smith. If you’ve ever seen his “lecture” DVDs, seen him at Comic-Con, or laughed during CHASING AMY, you’re with me here. There’s something about his brain that I absolutely adore. Can you imagine being so thoroughly amused and entertained all night? I fear I’d never get in a word edgewise, but KS would be the best prom date ever.

Category 3: The “There’s a Very Good Chance He Plays for the Other Team but Tell That To My Estrogen” Crush

Um, I’m not sure I should write this guy’s name since he’s only rumored to enjoy the other locker room, but he’s played Superman’s arch nemesis and has been in a much-celebrated movie that features rose imagery. At any rate, there’s something about this guy that defies all reasonable explanation when it comes to me digging him. He’s just…cool.

Category 4: The “Thank Goodness Someone Else Thinks He’s Hot, Too” Crush

Imagine my relief when my hairdresser validated that this guy was strangely hot. I did not tell her I thought so. Remember Michael Wincott? He was Alan Rickman’s henchman in ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES. (And, yes, Alan Rickman is delish, but he’s much too conventional when you compare him to the Wincott.) There’s just something about a man with a voice that sounds as if he drank a quart of tequila, slammed the bottle to the floor, ground the glass beneath his boot heel, then licked up every shard and swallowed it.

Scared yet?

Category 5: The “Oh, Crap, I’ve Become Mrs. Robinson” Crush

Very purty.

Category 6: The “If I Could Be Turned, She Would Be the One To Do It” Girl-Crush

Hi, Seven of Nine. I want to be you, and I think that’s where this comes from. That’s the theory anyway.

And just to bring things full circle….

Category 7: The “This Was The Second Clue That I Would Have Issues” Crush

Yeah. Again, I was young, and that red scarf…. How could I resist some Speed?

To round this out, here’s just a hint of that warped romance in MIDNIGHT REIGN, Vampire Babylon, Book Two available February 5 (plugs away!). Of course, there’s also disembodied sex, mayhem, and sharp teeth involved, but I personally couldn’t find a crush to fit that category for the above list. Maybe in a few years when I get out of my cave.

By Friday, I’ll be randomly choosing one reader from the comment section to win a signed trade edition of NIGHT RISING, Vampire Babylon, Book One. But I also have a pretty great prize being offered up at my Website.

I know! It’s so awesome! I have another of these Giclee Billy Martinez/Neko Press prints hanging on my own wall!

Hope you enter, and that your Valentine’s Day is much more traditional and fulfilling than what you have seen here today.

Man, i want that “little blood sucker” print. MINE! My precious…

Also: is it just me or does the cover girl of Midnight Reign look kind of like the “I have a crush on Obama” chick?

Count me in Chris! BTW, way cool trailor!

My first crush (if you don’t count that my parents were called into school when I was in 1st grade and was known as “The Kissing Bug” because I grabbed boys and kissed them) was Davy Jones of The Monkees, followed by Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees. Actual real-life oh-so-earnest statement to my 5th grade BFF: “You know, I really want to like Mickey now, but I don’t want Davey to get mad at me.” Good Grief!

If I could get away with one-night with him crush: Jimmy Smits from his LA Law days. The scene on the table when him and Susan Dey first hooked up? I shouted out loud “Go for it, Gracie!”

My “I would leave my husband in a minute for him, no lie” crush: Garth Brooks. Shut up. All of you. I mean it.

My pervy old broad crush: well, hell, THAT list is longer than what’s under a Scotsman kilt!

My Mrs. Robinson crush combined with a serious case of WTF do I see in him-ness. Jason Dohring, the guy who played Logan on Veronica Mars. It turned out he wasn’t actually that young and I think he’s even married. But he still looks disturbingly like Dana Carvey.

Bev - I’m pretty sure my husband would leave me for George Strait.

Bam, you could be the lucky one! Neko press has their stuff on display at www.nekocomicspress.com. Lots of lovely yum-yum things to hang on the wall. (I wish I had another print so I could send it to you for being so cool!)

Yay, Bev! Thank you for playing! And YOW about that LA LAW scene. I’m with you. Awesome for being the Kissing Bug. All you were doing was spreading the love.
I daaaarrre you to share your pervy crushes. Is Zac Efron on there? : )

Lorelie! OMG, how much do I love Jason Dohring, too? It’s because of the whole VERONICA MARS thing though. His chemistry with Ms. Bell seeped off the screen and claimed me, too. Love!

ok, in my defence, my father is a HUGE batman fan (complete with 1989 movie style costume that he bought/ made) so i have to admit to being right there with you on the robin thing. scary, huh?

    Fun post!

I have a list like this too, but ours only intersect at Michael Wincott. I love him soooo much. I wish to hell he would get some leading roles, just so I could listen to him talk for two hours. He was the only thing that made Seraphim Falls watchable (a Western, starring Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson? Shoulda been awesome! but no)

Wait, now here’s an idea… Michael Wincott, narrating audio books. *dies*

“Wait, now here’s an idea… Michael Wincott, narrating audio books. *dies*”

Oh, good lord. I don’t think I’d actually be able to follow the story. I’d be drooling just hearing his voice. The man has a great voice. Can you have a crush on a voice?

I’ve recently had a Mrs. Robinson episode at my daugher’s elementary school. I thought the young man was a father. For weeks, I crushed on him from across the parking lot from across the street. Until one day, we were on the same side of the street and I had to realize he was an older brother and not even of legal drinking age. I had to go home and shower, I felt like a dirty old woman!

Michael Wincott: He of the Sexy Voice. There’s none other. Well, except maybe for Leonard Cohen. And that dude from Massive Attack.

Kid crushes: Ty Miller (The Kid from “The Young Riders”) and Michael Beihn (Hicks from Aliens and Reese from Terminator). And my undying devotion of vintage Christian Slater.

  9. Ann M.
    9

Interesting topic… crushes.. I remember having several crushes in elementary school. Remember doing name games to see what if your “true” love really was.

BTW, all you Boy Wonder fans, I remember reading that they had quite a bit of trouble fitting him with tights that disguised his over-generous package. Enjoy the fantasy.

I daaaarrre you to share your pervy crushes. Is Zac Efron on there? : )

Oh Good God, NO! Nor is Jenson Ackles (sorry, Bam)! I’ve got underwear older than those two! No, seriously, I DO!

Nope, at the top of my “I’d do him” list is Josh Wald, who is young to ME, but who makes my pervy old lady bits tingle! And I never get tired of gazing at other choice bits o’ sweet beefcake nut clusters like Raoul Bova, Nathan Kamp and… well… like I said, it’s a looong list. But they have to be at least a few years older than my oldest kids (21) cuz otherwise…eewww.

Michael Wincott: He of the Sexy Voice. There’s none other. Well, except maybe for Leonard Cohen. And that dude from Massive Attack.

Wait! We could include AURAL pleasures?! Cuz, dude, I have a MASSIVE unrequited crush on Phil Gigante who does the narration for KMM’s Highlander audio books. The man’s voice gives me multiple, never ending, full bodied EARGASMS. Whenever I finish one of his audio books I’m like a crack addict trying to score the next one.

Holy wow–all this Michael Wincott love! Who knew?

Christi–your post is such a relief. You just moved Robin up to the “Thank Goodness Someone Else Thinks He’s Hot, Too” category. *phew*

Ann A.–thanks (and I’m looking forward to your book)! Your idea about having the Wincott do audio books caused a definite *schwing*.

Nadja–Yes, you can have a crush on a voice…I wrote about it in the Vampire Babylon series. OMG…a thought…Michael Wincott should play The Voice. Inspiration!
And too funny about the Mrs. Robinson crush….

Carrie–YOUNG RIDERS! I used to love that show! And The Kid was totally hot. Isn’t it funny how Stephen Baldwin was smarmy even in buckskin? Also…Michael Beihn? Humma-na-humma-na.

Ann M.–Hey, remember that orgami-type game where you folded the paper and put different guys’ names on the flaps? I don’t know how many hours that consumed my young life.

    : )

  12. Chris Marie Green
    12

Bev–Robin’s package has just been dragged through the rain and delivered all warped to my door, just like UPS on a bad day! Still…hee!

  13. Ann Aguirre
    13

I will watch anything with Michael Wincott in it. ANYTHING.

I’m considering getting two games that I would otherwise never play (NARC and Halo 2), just because he did voice work in them.

PS - I’m this way about Ron Perlman too. I’m having nerdgasms over HELLBOY 2.

  14. Wendy
    14

Michael Wincott is so hot! And his voice is fantastic.

  15. Teddypig
    15

    Charlie’s Angels?

The voice it made my pop culture senses go off.

  16. Samantha
    16

My most troubling category is the “He’s an animated character, what is wrong with me?” one. So many reasons to cringe and drool at the same time. I’m not even going to list them it’s so embarassing ;D.

  17. Christine
    17

Another Robin crusher here. But my crushing was dictated purely by the reasoning that everyone else was crushing on Batman, so my chances were better if I crushed on the sidekick! lol

My first *serious* crush, though… the one that involved practice kisses with the pillow… was definitely Andy Gibb. :P

    Great post, Chris Marie! ;)

  18. Jambrea
    18

I think I fall into some of these categories. I LOVE Kevin Smith and I’m right there with you. As for the Mrs. Robinson comment, the older I get the younger the cute ones seem to be! :)

  19. Josie
    19

Great call on Michael Wincott! Add me to the approving crowd.
As a teenager in the early 90’s the majority of my crushes revolved around the boys of 90210 and Melrose Place - I once owned a life size poster of Luke Perry, hung it at the end of the bed and scared the crap outta myself waking up one morning with the furrowed brow towering over me.
However, my most serious teen crush belongs to Christian Slater for Pump up the Volume. He was soooo bad.
There was also a Johnny Depp / 21 Jump St thing but I don’t think that really counts because he is still the hotness.

  20. Chris Marie Green
    20

    Hey!

Ann A–LOL about watching anything with the Wincott. You know, he should pop over here to see this fan club!

Wendy and Teddypig are in the voice crush camp, too! This is old hat, but I’m in love with Keifer Sutherland’s voice. I think on Television Without Pity, they call him The Velvet (or at least that’s what they call his voice). Totally on target.

Samantha–please show us your list!?! I have Speed Racer up there. Or maybe everyone wanted to jump his bones when they were 3….

Nalani–thank you! Seriously, can’t wait to read the new book.

Christine–and we have another Robin fan! Boy, what a relief. But you know what? Dick Grayson grows up to be Nightwing, right? And Nightwing is so freakin’ hot. (And that take us back to Samantha’s comment about disturbing animated crushes. Well, Nightwing’s a comic character so it’s not really the same. I should’ve had a comic book category.) And thanks for the compliment!

Josie–OMG, talk about posters…. In college, my roommate had this full-sized James Dean poster on the door. One night when she was gone for the weekend, I woke up and saw that daggone thing and I mistook it for an intruder. Well, I screamed bloody murder. Yup. Me. I went into the hall to get a drink of water and everyone was out of their rooms going, “Huh? Wha?” Awkward.

  21. SweetNSourGirl
    21

I just watched “Clerks” today and I totally get the hanging out with Kevin Smith thing. But anything more than hanging out would be weird ‘cuz I’d end up thinking he’d put it in a movie.

A gorgeous guy I have a bit of a crush on is Kyle Schmid from “Blood Ties”…it’s almost like he’s too good looking to be real!

  22. Lorelie
    22

Ok, so with all the Michael Wincott comments it bothered me I didn’t know who the dude was. So I went to YouTube. . . he was the bad guy from The Crow. He does have a wicked sexy voice. Not absolutely in love with him though.

    And since I’m here:

Which Robin are we talking about here? With the POWing, I thought Chris meant the old school ’60s one (the link’s broken for me but then my internet’s acting funny) but then Christi referenced the 1989 movie. ‘Cause if it’s Chris O’Donnell I’m with ya and I’m not a bit ashamed. He was the only bright spot in that blight of a movie.

As a teenager in the early 90’s the majority of my crushes revolved around the boys of 90210 and Melrose Place - I once owned a life size poster of Luke Perry

Brandon Walsh. :::hangs head in shame:::

Hell, after admitting that, I might as well go whole hog. The New Kids on the Block. Specifically Donni Wahlberg. Can I say I squealed and giggled inappropriately during his scene in The Sixth Sense?

  23. Kaitlin
    23

LOL! Oh, this is a great topic. :D I’ve been sitting here giggling reading all the comments.

I admit I had not idea who Michael Wilcott was until I hit the link. I agree on the sexy, yummy voice.

My major crush right now is Richard Armitage who plays Guy of Gisborne on the truly sad new Robin Hood. He also played Mr. Thornton in the BBC miniseries North and South. His voice makes me think of melted dark chocolate….*slurp*

My kiddy crush was Jonathan Knight of NKOTB. He was tall & I had a thing for puppy dog eyes. Now he’s just ugh! :P

I also had a thing for George Michael during his Faith days…who didn’t? Now, it just makes me laugh. :D

And speaking of comic crushes…I had a huge one on the black rider in Voltron. he-he

  24. Josie
    24

Chris Marie: LOL - I’m glad it’s not just me that happened too! It’s really quite difficult to explain to people you thought you were about to be attacked by a brooding poster!

Kaitlin: Great call on Richard Armitage… I could sit and stare at him all day *sighs happily*

  25. Chris Marie Green
    25

SweetNSour–ooo, you’re probably right about Kevin Smith. I’d worry about dating *any* writer to tell you the truth, LOL.

Lorelie–I’m sorry those links didn’t work! I was talking about the “old” Robin. I wouldn’t be embarrassed about Chris O’Donnell’s. Okay, well maybe I would be a little embarrassed because that movie was a Batsuit-nipple-fest. *grin*

Kaitlin–can I tell you how important the sight of George Michael in those “Faith” jeans was to my youth? It was strange to see him on ELI STONE the other night!

Josie and Kaitlin–I think I’m going to have to check out this Armitage guy. But, you know, I tried to watch that series and it just wasn’t happening for me!

  26. Renee
    26

I can totally geek out about you with Kevin Smith my love for him knows few bounds. and i must add my voice to the throng that adore Michael Wincott he is strangely sexy even without the voice. I lurrrve him in the crow he’s just so evil but tasty. Congrats on Vampire Babylon it looks great!

  27. fiveandfour
    27

I was in 1st grade and was known as “The Kissing Bug” because I grabbed boys and kissed them

Bev, I did that in kindergarten; I can still remember chasing this boy all over the playground, pinning him up against a portable, and laying one on him.

As for voice crushes, I have two. One is Matthew McConaughey. I don’t really like much more about him, but that voice pushes some very important buttons (this is a hard concept for the husband to understand). The second is Ewan McGregor, though in his case I like just about everything about him - personality, sense of humor, looks. And I’m just now noticing a Scottish theme with the voices….yes, I can work with that.

Finally, with the Mrs. Robinson angle, I think Jake Gyllenhaal kind of qualifies for me (it’s not quite that bad, but we’re on the verge with the age disparity). He may also qualify for the “Good Chance He Plays for the Other Team” category, depending on what you believe. And if he plays for both teams (like some of us like to believe)….yes, I can work with that, too.

  28. Jaime
    28

Okay, the “oh my gawd, what are you thinking” would be Shia Leboeuf; “Crazier still” when I was in college (college!!) I loved the Biker Mice From Mars because of Ian Ziering being a voice of one of the cute little mice; “Pretty normal, but creepy” Lex Luther new Superman/boy whatever.

  29. Chris Marie Green
    29

Renee–thank you so much, and I’m so happy you don’t think I’m a weirdo, either! LOL. I seriously thought twice about this subject. *grin*

fiveandfour–OMG, Ewan. Seriously, seriously hot. I know he’s short (and I generally like ‘em tall), but his sex appeal trumps everything else about him.

Jaime–did you see that Saturday Night Live skit with Maya Randolph where she was lusting after Shia? He’s a charming thang.

gosh i still have my first crush, a crush onhim, last timei seen him, about 8 yrs ago( YES I KNOW, IM TO THE POINT OF BEING REALLY REALLY SILLY)

and i still dont know why i didnt screw him when i had the chance, for him to be my first . damn u know i was just addingthe yrs, but like 25 yrs ago i met him lol god im old and has a crush

  31. Sarai
    31

Okay well I have a crush on Christian Bale but seriously who doesn’t? I do have a girl crush on “Crush” the American Galdator. I am not sure but something about her… Anywho I also have a crush on Geekie guys like Henry from Ugly Betty… yeah

  32. Chris Marie Green
    32

Tami–you are not silly! Oh, to have met the perfect man. I envy you. :)

Sarai–Henry has such a finely developed torso. I cannot even believe it!

  33. Samantha
    33

    Oh jesus: my cartoon crushes

Chiba from Wolf’s Rain …and okay pretty much the rest of them, too.
He Man - sliding down in seat
Frylock - Aqua Teen Hunger Force’s resident voice of reason and a genius; also a giant order of fries…and a genius!

And I’m going to quit now because I’m too embarassed. I will however see Bam’s Lion O and raise her a Cheetara ;) .

Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer, Gooooo!

  34. Carrie Lofty
    34

Hey Lorelei, if you still dig Donny Wahlberg, you need to see “Band of Brothers.” He’s in all ten episodes and does a DAMN fine job as a stand-up soldier. Excellent work. It’s like my embarassing days of NKOYB Wahlberg crushin’ were redeemed coz he wound up a decent guy!

  35. Lorelie
    35

Huh, I can’t believe I didn’t notice him, Carrie. Steven got that for Christmas the year it came out. Of course, I kinda watched w/ my eyes closed if that makes any sense. I can’t really sit through a war movie anymore if I’m actively paying attention. Which sucks because Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket both used to be in my top 25 movies. When We Were Soldiers fucked me up hardcore. That was when I checked out of the war movies.

  36. Chris Marie Green
    36

Yes, Samantha, thank you! (Especially since you’re simpatico with the whole Speed thing!)

Carrie–Oh, BAND OF BROTHERS. I know it’s a serious show, but my hormones…MY HORMONES! I particularly love Damien Lewis.

Lorelie–it makes absolute sense that you watch with you eyes closed. These movies are so gut-wrenching. BLACK HAWK DOWN puts me through the wringer.

Everyone, I’ll be drawing a name for the copy of NIGHT RISING by the end of the day, okay? Thanks so much for playing!
