Paranormal’d Out? by Shiloh Walker

Okay, guys. Drew my name from my guest blog the other day. The winner is Shannon. Shannon commented:

I have been a fan of paranormals for years. It used to be so difficult to find releases (except for in October). I am loving the plethora of selections these days. While I used to read any paranormal I came across, I have started to become a bit more picky. When there are more books to choose from you have the ability to be selective. It is a nice “problem” to have, trying to decide which paranormal to read next.

Shannon, if you can email me at shilohwalker(at)gmail.com and put “Bam’s contest” in the subject line so my spam filter doesn’t eat it, I’d appreciate it!

To everybody, thanks for stopping by and I hope you check out The Missing.

******

Thanks to Dionne for having me crash her blog again.

The MissingI figure since blog-hopping can be considered working if I do some promo first, let me just say…

I have a new book due on 11/4/08, titled THE MISSING. It’s a paranormal romantic suspense, featuring a heroine with psychic abilities.

Da blurb…

From a bestselling author whose stories are “exhilarating [and] action-packed”* comes a sinfully sexy novel of romantic suspense about a woman whose psychic gift drives away the man she loves—and years later draws him back to her…

LOVE LOST

As a teenager, Taige Branch was able to do things with her psychic gift that others couldn’t understand—except for Cullen Morgan, the boy her stole her heart. He did his best to accept her abilities, until his mother was brutally murdered—and he couldn’t forgive Taige for not preventing her death.

PASSION FOUND

Now a widowed father, Cullen Morgan has never forgotten Taige. But what brings her back into his life is another tragic event. His beloved little girl has been kidnapped, and Taige is his only hope of finding her.

A LOVE THAT NEVER DIED

Working together against the clock, Cullen and Taige can’t help but wonder whether—if they find his daughter in time—it isn’t too late for the overpowering love that still burns between them…

I’m running a couple of contests to help spread the word/increase sales/generate interest, which you can read about here and here.

And because promo is always more interesting if it involves prizes…I’m giving away a signed copy of my summer release, THROUGH THE VEIL to a commenter today (well, probably in a day or two-everybody who comments gets entered into the drawing).

Okay…promo part done. Wanna talk books? I never work very well during the week when a book comes out, too frazzled, so I might as well talk books. I can even pretend it’s working, right? I did the promo bit…so let’s talk books. Namely…paranormal books.

Vampires. Werewolves. Ghosts. Psychics. Demons. Witches. Angels. Zombies. Merfolk. Shapeshifters. Devils and gods.

Man, it seems like we’ve done just about everything in paranormal. Yes, it seems like the paranormal wave is leveling out some, but it’s still selling like crazy.

Which means people are still reading it, right? I know I am. Over the past couple of months, I’ve been gobbling down Marjorie M. Liu, Virginia Kantra and Nalini Singh. Yeah, yeah, I know…I’m a little behind. But that just means there’s plenty of books in the series to tide me over, right? ;)

And I always need more to tide me over. Never mind that I’ve got an entire bookcase for my TBR books. It’s no longer a pile. It’s a case. (Smoochies to the DH-the bookcases were a pressie from him.)

And I’m rambling…where was I? Oh, yeah. I always need books to tide me over. I mean, it’s possible that at some point I could have no money to buy books, and some of my friends that give me early reads may decide to make me suffer. It could happen. So having extra books is a necessity. Right?

Have to have the extra books. Or I could be craving some paranormal after the trend has leveled out. Everything comes and goes in trends in publishing, so I’m told, so we could always just pretend I’m stockpiling for a day when paranormals aren’t so easy to find.

Are you still into the paranormal or are you ready for something different?

    Hi Shiloh:

I am definitely still into paranormal and urban fantasy books. (I’m reading a paranormal right now as a matter of fact. lol) However I tend to genre hop a great deal. I often have a contemporary novel and a paranormal one on the go at the same time.

    I guess I get board easy? :)

You are busy today, “blog hopping”. I do hope “The Missing” does very well it sounds like a great read, I will look for it here in Canada.

    Take Care

Yeah, I think I might have stretched myself a little thin…lol. But since I don’t really work very well when a new book hits, I guess it’s okay.

If you pick up The Missing, hope you like!

Hi Shiloh! Congrats on the new release. There’s very little I love more than a childhood love story, so this one sounds right up my alley! I think I’ll pick it up.

As for paranormals, yes, I still read them. Although I find myself not trying new stuff as often. Nalini Singh has a new Angel related series coming out, as does JR Ward. I’ll read both of those. But for the most part, I find myself sticking with authors whose series I’m already reading: you, Singh, Ward, Jessica Anderson, Patricia Briggs, Larissa Ione, Ann Aguirre, etc. And I’m not giving newer authors as much of a shot, unless I hear tremendous buzz on the internet.

The thing is that, there’s SO much paranormal out there that it can be difficult to discern the wheat from the chaff, you know? Am I paranormaled out? No, I don’t think so, but I’m definitely getting much pickier about what paranormals I’ll read. Plus, as the creatures branch out, the sex can get to be a little squicky, you know? I read a mermaid book recently that made me throw up a little in my mouth. I’m all for the fact that paranormals allow for the sex to be a bit more inventive. But there’s inventive and then there’s one step too far. LOL!

No need to enter me in the contest, I already own Through the Veil.

    Hi! _The Missing_ sounds intriguing!

I have to say that I am WAY behind you and everyone else with the paranormals, and I don’t think I’ve read anything classified as urban fantasy. (It’s all good, there are a whole lot of worlds out there for me to discover and enjoy! ;) So no Paranormal Fatigue Disorder here.

I’ve been trying out new authors from DA and SBTB recommendations and have discovered lots of wonderful new -to me- authors I’d never heard of before. (Sometimes I feel like I’ve been living in a cave!) But now I’ve discovered a new problem: The TBR pile. It’s starting to overwhelm me!

I never used to have a TBR pile. I’d buy books (mostly one at a time) from local bookstores, usually after an excruciatingly long wait for them to appear on the shelves. Then I’d glom the book(s) as fast as I could before settling down to reread at leisure while waiting for the next ones on my limited list of auto-buy authors to appear in bookstores. I’d only buy books I was sure would end up as keepers. Sometimes I would order a book and wait weeks on pins and needles, haunting the bookstore and driving the poor salespeople crazy with my inquiries about their expected arrival.

Then my brother moved to the Big City and I would use visits to him as an excuse to get to the bookstores. More variety, bigger bookstores, lower prices. I would usually buy about five books on one visit. Then I’d go and glom and reread until the next visit.

Then: TA DAH! I discovered internet bookstores. No need to go anywhere (except the library or relatives who had internet access) and books would be brought to my local post office or mailbox or sometimes even the doorbell would ring and I could sign for a package… Heaven! But even this didn’t really change my buying and reading habits.

The big change was getting my very first -ever!- computer of my own and a fast internet access. I now had unlimited surfing time with no one to kick me off the computer after I’d barely dealt with my email. Goodbye sleep! I discovered author blogs, reader blogs and all manner or exiting sites with all manner of recommendations and fun stuff. I bought more books -trying out recommendations- but had less time to read because of my internet addiction. All of a sudden I had a TBR pile of around 30 books. (Yes, I know, compared to other people that is not so much!)

THE PROBLEM: The TBR pile is full of wonderful unread books that I’m developing a dislike to. I find no joy in the pile of unread books, no expectation, no excitement at the discoveries awaiting me. Instead, I am starting to view them as a chore, an obligation, a reminder of money spent (in vain?). The pile is starting to make me anxious. And as new books arrive I’m more likely to read them than touch any of the ones that have been moldering in the pile for a while.

I’ve never before had this problem. I’ve always been happy to have a pile of new reads awaiting me, especially for a holiday.

THE SOLUTION: I think I have to stop buying books for a while, organize the TBR into some kind of (loose) reading order and just dig in. Maybe put most of them out of sight so they’ll stop making me anxious, leaving out just a few. (Maybe put out of sight all other books?) No visits to the library for a while, either. And I definitely have to curb the time I spend on line!

    Maybe there’s a lesson in here somewhere. . . ? Nah!

That said, want to add to my TBR pile? XD

Shiloh - I’m just discovered paranormal earlier this year. So I’m far from being paranormalled out.

    *waving* Hi, Shiloh!

Me, it depends on the writer–but I’ve said that before. Best luck with the release!

I’m still into paranormals but I can tell burnout is coming. I used to devour all of them. Now, I only want to read the ones I KNOW will be good. I’ve read to many substandard books that were rushed out to try to hop on the paranormal bandwagon.

    Hi, Shiloh :)
I am far from being paranormaled out *bg*… especially where werewolves are concerned.
But, I do try and read from one genre to another so I won’t get tired on a certain romance genre.

Glad to know people aren’t getting too burned out on the genre. Me, I’m definitely selective and I do bounce from one genre to another. ;) Short attention span.

I’m still very much into the paranormals - although I do go through sputs where I don’t feel like a vampire, or maybe this time I don’t feel like a werewolf - but later I always come back to them. So I still stockpile all the different stuff possible.

I still love paranormals. I’m just having a little difficulty finding new authors right now, especially since I’m sort of caught up on all the series I normally read (Kenyon, Hamilton, Harris, etc). I’m thinking I’ll try Singh’s sensation series next. I’ve always been interested in it, just kept having to push it back.

Good luck with the release :) !

I still enjoy paramormals or dark fantasy as we used to call it. I have found myself, lately, going for lighter less involved books. Why? Time of year? The snow is flying? I don’t know. Well, I do know - sometimes something light, easy and open is refreshing from all the deep and dark. Ya know?

By the by - the TBR in my house is not a pile either - it would be cases in my case, not just one case. You are the next book on the pile or in the case (yes, you were moved to the top. Sometimes it just has to be done). Hope the numbers turn out really well!!

    Peace.

    Congratulations on your release, Shiloh!

I am definitely still loving paranormals. It was my grandmother who actually got me hooked on them by sharing her copy of Gena Showalter’s The Darkest Night. I absolutely love Gena’s Lords series and am anxiously awaiting the next one. But, it’s not just her stories that I read now. I’m all over the board on paranormals and am always looking for another author to add to my list of those to be read.

I’m like the others too. I am now getting selective about the paranormal I read. Ive only been into them a few years and there are still a few series I feel obligated to read but sometimes I just dont have it in me to start a whole new world. At the same time I am still a majority paranormal girl who switches when I need a break. I am however getting worried because even some of the ones on my buy anything with their name on it faves are seeming to burn out on the genre and/or publishing some things that leave me disappointed. I pray there isnt a paranormal crash…I couldnt take it right now!

Hi, Shi! I’m such a slow adopter, I’m just getting into paranormals now. I’m not reading them exclusively, but I don’t think I read any genre exclusively–I like hopping around otherwise I think I tire of that kind of book.

And very lovely shelves those are–yay for you!

I got sucked into paranormal romance about two years ago and am completely hooked. But I’ve been reading genre romance in all its glory for about 30 years now (OMG, I’m old) and whatever trends come and go, I’ll always be up for a great story about two people falling in love, whether they’re vampires, werewolves, Fey, witches, psychics, duchesses or just plain boring old humans.

I don’t think I’ll get burned out on paranormals because I continue to read regency & contemporary, but if the fad fades, the ratio of paranormal to muggle romance might shift a bit.

Hey everybody… thanks for dropping by. So total burnout isn’t here…selectivity is, that’s kind of where I’m at, too.

I’m out of town for the next couple of days, but when I get back, I’ll draw a winner and Bam will post the details. :)

I’m not tired of paranormals, they’ve just never been my favorite. I’m a big fan of Lara Adrien, though. I just saw the cover for her next book and felt a little thrill.

Now, romantic suspense with paranormal elements is different. I love it. In fact, I write it! :) The Missing sounds great.
